Cataract Surgery Q & A
What is cataract surgery?
Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure that removes the natural lens of your eye and replaces it with an artificial one.
At Marano Eye Care, the team performs cataract surgery using medical-grade lasers. Laser cataract surgery is safer and quicker than traditional open techniques. In addition, it allows for less downtime and a speedier recovery.
What does cataract surgery do?
Cataract surgery is used to treat cataracts, a medical condition that clouds the lens of your eye, resulting in blurry vision. Most cataracts form slowly over an extended period. If they interfere with your quality of life, surgical intervention may be necessary.
When considering if cataract surgery will benefit you, the team at Marano Eye Care recommends asking the following:
- Do bright lights make it difficult to see?
- Do vision problems affect your independence?
- Do you struggle to read books or watch TV?
- Does your vision affect your ability to work or drive?
If you answered “yes” to any of these inquiries, don’t wait to make an appointment.
What does laser cataract surgery involve?
The team at Marano Eye Care performs Femto Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery with the blade-less Alcon LenSx® Laser. Prior to treatment, the team administers a topical anesthetic to ensure your comfort. After the anesthesia sets in, your provider uses a powerful, computer-controlled microscope to take high-resolution images of your eyes.
Your provider uses these images to develop a highly customized surgical plan tailored to your individual needs. They use targeted laser energy to make a series of microscopic incisions in your cornea and then soften and break up your damaged lens. Once the lens is in pieces, they suction it out and replace it with an intraocular lens.
The team at Marano Eye Care offers several types of intraocular lenses, including those made by Symfony®, PanOptix®, Vivity™, and Synergy™.
In most cases, laser cataract surgery takes 15-20 minutes. Have a friend or family member pick you up because you won’t be able to drive following treatment.
What are the benefits of laser cataract surgery?
Laser cataract surgery offers a variety of benefits over traditional cataract surgery, including:
- Better outcomes
- Improved safety
- Lower risk of surgical complications
- Refined vision
- Less downtime
Perhaps even more exciting is the fact that most people achieve 20/20 vision following laser cataract surgery.
