Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty For Glaucoma

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) for Glaucoma: What You Need to Know

Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve and lead to permanent vision loss. The optic nerve contains more than one million nerve fibers that carry visual information from the retina to the brain. When this nerve becomes compromised—often due to elevated eye pressure—your vision can become cloudy and progressively worsen.

One of the most effective, non‑invasive treatments for lowering eye pressure is Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT). At Marano Eye Care, we offer SLT to help manage glaucoma and protect long‑term vision.

How Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty Works

SLT is a laser procedure performed by our ophthalmologists as an initial treatment for glaucoma or when prescription eye drops are no longer sufficiently working on their own. The treatment is called “selective” because the laser energy is absorbed only by specific pigmented cells within the eye’s drainage system, minimizing heat and tissue damage. It stimulates the system to work better rather than vaporizing tissue like a traditional laser.

During SLT, the laser is applied to the trabecular meshwork—the eye’s natural drainage tissue. This triggers a biological response that improves fluid outflow and reduces intraocular pressure.

Most patients begin to see results within one to three months, with pressure reductions of up to 30%. The effects typically last one to five years or longer, depending on the individual.

Am I a Candidate for SLT?

You may be a candidate for SLT if you have:

  • Primary open‑angle glaucoma

  • Secondary open‑angle glaucoma

  • Elevated intraocular pressure that requires additional control

After a comprehensive eye exam, your doctor will determine whether SLT is appropriate for you. If the effects of your initial SLT treatment diminish over time, a repeat procedure may be recommended. While repeat SLT can still be effective, results may be less pronounced over time.

What Does Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty Cost?

SLT is an FDA‑approved glaucoma treatment and is typically covered by Medicare and most medical insurance plans. For patients without insurance, out‑of‑pocket costs and copays will vary. Your doctor will review your coverage and discuss whether SLT is the right option for your condition.

If SLT is not ideal for you, our ophthalmologists may recommend alternatives such as argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) or micropulse laser trabeculoplasty, both of which offer similar pressure‑lowering benefits.
